Jul. 11—TOLLAND — The Town Council this week approved spending just more than $2 million on school improvements, a fire truck and to build a sidewalk that complies with the Americans With Disabilities Act.

The money will come from the capital improvement plan. The allocations include $555,000 for various school improvements, $1.2 million for the purchase of the fire department tanker, and $400,000 for the ADA-compliant sidewalk. The council approved the allocations unanimously.

Town Manager Brian Foley said last month that the new tanker would replace a 31-year-old tanker that no longer has a functioning pump.

The $555,000 for school improvements would include updating the security communications system at the intermediate school, middle school, and high school; replacing the high school’s dishwasher; and several improvements at the middle school, including penetration-resistant windows and doors, door cameras, refurbishment of the main office, and resurfacing and repairing the pavement, access roads, and parking lot.

Although the council was united in their voting, the residents remained divided on having a $400,000 ADA-compliant sidewalk built on the Town Green.
