Apparatus Spotlight: Kaufman (TX) Fire Department’s 2018 International 4400-Pierce Saber Pumper

On December 1, 2018, the Kaufman (TX) Fire Department placed Engine 3 into service.

The cab is an International 4400 four-door model with seating for five. The body is Pierce Manufacturing’s second-generation Saber/Commercial model and is constructed of aluminum. Full-depth compartments and Gortite roll-up doors are featured. Self-contained breathing apparatus and extinguisher storage compartments are adjacent to the rear wheel wells on each side.

The power is provided by a Navistar N9 330-hp engine paired with an Allison EVS 3000 five-speed transmission with push-button controls. The apparatus has a Waterous CSU single-stage, top-mount 1,250-gpm pump along with a Pro Poly 1,000-gallon tank. Foam is provided by a Husky 3 System with a 30-gallon cell paired with a Hercules CAFS. Foam is plumbed to the front bumper discharge and the two upper speedlays.

The hose bed accommodates 1,200 feet of five-inch LDH and 400 feet of preconnected three-inch hose. The front bumper contains 100 feet of 1¾-inch hose. Two 1¾-inch preconnected speedlays (200 feet each) are located on the lower front of the pump panel along with a 200-foot 2½-inch dead lay.

A Hannay booster reel with 150 feet of one-inch hose is located in a right-side compartment below the cab. A Task Force Tips Crossfire deck gun (Model # XFC 52) is mounted on top of the pump panel. Ladder storage on the right rear of the body features Duo-Safety ladders (a 24-foot 900A two-section, a 14-foot 775A roof, and a 10-foot 585A folding).

Warning lights include a Whelen Freedom IV-Q Lightbar (72-inch) along with Whelen M6 and M9 lights on the body perimeter. A Whelen TAD8 is mounted on the body rear. Scene lighting is provided by a Whelen Pioneer Model PFS2 brow light, Whelen Pioneer Model PCPSM2 lights centered on the body sides, and Whelen Pioneer Model PCPSM1 lights mounted on each side of the rear bulkheads.

Audio warning devices include a flush mounted Federal Q2B siren and a Whelen Model 295SL101 siren module connected to a Whelen Model 315A speaker mounted through the right front bumper.
