By Lindsay Dye

Pierce Job #33450

Truck 505 began service with the Flower Mound (TX) Fire Department on July 18, 2020. This unit is the first tractor-drawn aerial in the history of the department. Flower Mound joins Dallas and Irving as the only cities in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area to utilize tillers in their fleets. There are other cities in the Metroplex that have tillers on order.

The cab and chassis are the Velocity model with seating for six. A Coleman Mach 8 Roughneck mounted on the cab roof provides auxiliary cooling and heating for the cab, and a Danhard A/C unit provides cooling for the tiller cab. An EMS cabinet is centered on the right cab wall. The apparatus cab and trailer body are constructed of aluminum, with full depth compartments featuring hinged doors. SCBA storage is in both sides of the trailer. A Stokes box is located in a transverse compartment at the rear of the trailer.

Power is provided by a Detroit DD-13 525 HP engine and an Allison Fifth Generation Model EVS 4500P 6-speed transmission with push-button controls. The TAK-4 Independent Front Suspension System is featured as is the Pierce Command Zone advanced electronic and control system. TAK-4 is also featured on the tiller steering suspension system. A Harrison HNR 10kW generator is located above the goose neck of the trailer.

Featured on this truck is a Darley HH-500 Hydraulic PTO pump (500-GPM) paired with a 300-gallon water tank. This feature allows initial suppression if needed. The lays feature 200 feet of 1.75-inch hose along with 200 feet of 3-inch hose.

The aerial is Pierce’s heavy-duty steel 107-foot Ascendant. Four Fire Research SRA 110 lights are mounted on the aerial (two on each side of the tip and two on each side of the base section). Aerial rung lighting is provided by TechNiq Model D02 LED red lighting and is installed on both sides of the ladder. The pinnable waterway is constructed of anodized aluminum and provides 1,500-GPM to a Task Force Tips Typhoon Model Y5-EB1A monitor and a TFT Model M-ERP nozzle. Duo-Safety ground ladders (one 45-foot 3-section, one 35-foot 2-section extension, one 28-foot two-section, one 24-foot 2-section extension, one 16-foot roof ladder with hooks on both ends, and one 10-foot folding) are stored in the torque box. A Duo-Safety 8-foot roof ladder is mounted on the left side of the aerial. A Little Giant Model 13 folding ladder is stored in a compartment on top of the body.

Warning lights include a Whelen Freedom IV-D LED Lightbar (72-inch) and Whelen M6, M4, and WIONSMC LED lights on the apparatus perimeter. A Whelen TAM83 traffic director is on the rear of the tiller cab. Scene lighting includes two Fire Research Corporation SPA 570 lights located on the tiller body forward on each side and two FRC Model SPA 850 lights—one mounted on the rear of the tiller cab and one on the right side of the tank wall. Additional scene lighting includes an FRC Model SPA 851 mounted on the center of the cab brow, and two FRC Model SPAKR700-K28-ON-HD lights on each side of the top of the tiller trailer in line with the ladder cradle.

Audio warning devices include a Federal Q2B siren recessed through the front bumper and a Whelen Model 295HFS2 electronic siren module connected to two Whelen SA315P 100-watt speakers recessed through the front bumper.
