The Charleston Fire Department placed new Engine 112 into service recently, the department said in a Facebook post.
The previous apparatus was a 2013 Pierce Arrow XT Model, which has been replaced by a 2024 Pierce Saber. While keeping the 1,500 gallons-per-minute pump and 750-gallon water tank, the new engine is includes more storage and upgraded equipment.
The most noticeable differences between the old and new Engine 112 include the lower hosebed, ground ladders mounted on the outside, and only two crosslays, with the third crosslay moved to the rear of the apparatus. Additionally, there is a cabinet mounted in the crew cab area and a storage compartment mounted above the booster tank for added storage space.
“As we say goodbye to the old Engine 112, which is being reassigned to the reserve fleet as Engine 156, we welcome the new engine to continue delivering excellent service to our community,” the department said in the post.
