17-Year-Old Boy Dies After Being Hit by Prairieton (IN) FD Truck Responding to Fire

A Prairieton Fire Department truck was responding to a brush fire Wednesday, July 3, when it struck and killed a 17-year-old boy, wthr.com reported.

Tyler Wilson, 17, of Vigo County, was treated on scene by EMS before being flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis by helicopter where he later died, the report said.

“On behalf of the Prairieton Fire Department, I would like to extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family of the juvenile involved in Wednesday night’s incident,” Prairieton Chief Bud Bonham said in a Facebook post. “We are deeply saddened by this incident. This is truly a tragedy, and we are so very sorry for the loss of this young individual.”

According to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday near a residence on South Paddock Place in Terre Haute, fox59.com reported. Initially a brush fire call, as deputies were on the way, fire personnel requested EMS and lifeline to the scene.

A sheriff’s office official said when deputies got to the scene they learned a 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 registered to the Prairieton/Prairie Creek Fire Department had struck a pedestrian, the report said.

The firefighter who was driving the truck was tested for drugs and alcohol, according to the report. The sheriff’s official said the preliminary results came back negative.

The sheriff’s official said no charges will be filed in the incident, according to the report.
