Canterbury Fire Chief Michael Gamache announced recently that the fire department was awarded $75,986.96 to purchase new radio equipment, according to a recent Facebook post. Much of the radio equipment is more than 20 years old and has become unreliable. These funds, obtained through a comprehensive competitive grant application process, were made available by the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security through the Assistance to Firefighters (AFG) Grant Program.

“The ability to effectively communicate on an emergency scene is paramount to the safety of the responders as well as the effectiveness of the operation as we work to save lives and property,” Chief Gamache said. “I am appreciative of all who have contributed to this effort, including department and town employees, the board of selectmen, our Congressional delegation in Washington, D.C. as well as the guidance of Greg Bavis from First Responder Grants, LLC.”

Town Approves Truck Purchase

As part of another project, the town approved $850,000 for the fire department during a Town Meeting in March to replace a 1996 fire truck that is in a state of disrepair, concordmonitor.com reported. Earlier this summer, the department signed a contract with a manufacturer that estimates the truck will be finished near the end of 2025.
