The Los Angeles County Fire Department has selected KME to custom manufacture 12 engines and two tractor-drawn aerials, an order totaling over $5.6 million, for delivery this year.

The order is in addition to the 260 units delivered to the county by KME during the last two decades.

KME Director of Sales Phil Gerace said, “Establishing long-term commitments that include service and support are keys to our continued growth plan.”

The apparatus will be built on KME’s Predator Severe Service chassis and will be powered by Cummins engines. The units are designed for high volume use and include features for both performance and easy maintenance.

The engine compression brake and driveline retarder provide superior stopping ability and long brake life. The air ride rear suspension provides for excellent ride quality while minimizing maintenance issues, according to KME.

The company said its premium insulation package provides substantial engine heat protection as well as an extremely quiet interior cab environment in conjunction with a high performance air conditioning system.

The pumpers include a 1,500-gpm stationary pump, a 250-gpm auxiliary pump for pump-and-roll operations and a Class A foam system.

The 100-foot tractor-drawn aerials are equipped with 2,000-gpm pumps and 350-gallon stainless-steel water tanks. The short overall length, just over 55 feet, and a tractor wheelbase of 164 inches provide for an extremely tight turning radius, KME said.

The trucks were sold through KME’s factory sales and service center in Ontario, Calif.
